In Turn: My Experiences as an Advertising Intern #2 (An Adventure)

Today was the best day of my internship thus far. I was busy the entire time I was there with interesting things to do. Here are some highlights from my day:

  • I was moved into the production room where it’s warmer because the agency hired a new woman who took my usual desk out in the cold lobby.
  • I now work at one of the design computers so I get to use a pretty, shiny Mac.
  • I created an actual, legit press release. Gone are the days of fake press releases for fake companies.
  • I shredded hundreds of entry forms that I had inputted into a spreadsheet a week ago. I was a shredding machine!
  • I mildly annoyed Boss for the first time by asking one too many questions, but I also think I’ve been impressing her with my efficiency.
  • I finished up an envelope/prize promotion I’ve been working on for a few days. I really liked seeing the project through to the end.
  • I was given a company email address!
  • With aforementioned email address I emailed a number of different stores about their promotional card supplies. I felt so important sending emails from my smancy new email address.

Thanks to Greek Life, a Cardboard Cut Out of Me Exists…

I was selected to be one of two Greeks on campus to be made into cardboard cutouts to promote Greek Life. I literally walked past myself today. Strangest feeling in my entire life.

Sidenote: She’s shorter than me.

In Turn: My Experiences as an Advertising Intern #1 (An Adventure)

Today marked my first day at my new internship; the one whose interview had me all sorts of anxious a few weeks ago. As I walked the couple of blocks to the office–only running on a few hours of anxiety filled sleep from the night before–I felt optimistic. I arrived at the advertising agency exactly as a nearby church chimed the hour and I was pleased at how perfectly I had timed my walk.

My boss and her girl Friday (what I’ll be calling them from now on) were rushing around accomplishing morning tasks and getting the paper work ready for me as I stood trying to not be as awkward as I had been at the interview. I made a silent vow to myself to speak up and be less meek; I chalked the brief meeting with Boss about the basic outline of my internship as a success.

I was then guided by Girl Friday through the ins and outs of the office and all the classic intern-y things I would be doing. As Boss and Girl Friday mulled over what I could do for the first day, Boss let out a few comments that slightly dripped with “gotta love having an intern to do all the crappy tasks.”

And happy I was to do them. I spent the rest of my first day typing up addresses and emails from a drawing the agency did for one of their tire company clients. As I struggled trying to read countless indecipherable scrawlings, I amused myself by noting ridiculous email addresses. After a particularly terrible one (“mama smurf”), I saw this as an opportunity to build some rapport with Girl Friday. She laughed at the address and empathized about the horrid handwriting on most of the sheets. I could feel a smidgen of formality chip away between us. Another success.

After putting in data for over 50 people with terrible handwriting and a few more interesting email addresses later (“I live in volcanic ash” being my favorite), I wiped down the overly shiny counters in the front lobby like the intern that I am and was released.

I already have a game plan in place for conquering this internship. I’ve seen enough TV shows and movies to know the tricks from going from a lowly intern to someone with insight and ideas that are valuable and wanted. I have to wow them with how easy all the mundane tasks are (in the scenario in my head I’m chuckling as I say, “Psh, it was nothing”) so they start giving me things with meat. I’ve been told I’ll be able to work on actual campaigns, but I don’t want to waste time doing silly tasks trying to show them that I’ve mastered the ability to refill printers.

I’m excited to see where this new opportunity takes me.

Excited Doesn’t Begin to Describe It

Yesterday, in a moody flurry due to the Christmas void in my life (my parents went on vacation to Arizona so no Christmas this year) I made an impulsive buy that has me on a crazy photography high.

I cannot wait for it to be delivered and I can return to film photography. I can feel myself falling more and more in love with vintage things and this 1960′s camera has me so incredibly giddy. I’m looking forward to exploring lomography!!

Interview Anxieties

With the help of my Public Relations professor, I landed an interview with an Advertising Agency near my university. If things go well, I could get an internship directly related to what I’m studying and what I want to do with my life. This opportunity is huge, so of course I’m feeling the pressure. I really want the interview tomorrow to go well, but even attempting to prepare for it makes me worse off than when I just don’t think about it. Plus I have an online exam tomorrow morning right before the interview, so that’s weighing on my mind as well.

Big, big day tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

What’s in My Bag?

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done a post like this so it’s time again for another!

1. Purse: I got this bag from Forever21 (around $30) with my trip to England in mind. I wanted something cute that I could easily tote around all day long. The bag has a long crossbody strap as well as a braided shoulder one.

2. Wallet: An obvious thing to have in a purse…I’ve had this wallet for years now because wallets are something that once you get comfortable with one, it’s hard to switch.

3. Cell phone: My poor cell phone is cracked to hell after it took a short but scarring fall onto the cement. It was either the cell phone or my cat in his carrier. I chose the living thing and my phone suffered. It still works perfectly fine though!

4. Pencil Case: This Vera Bradley pencil case holds the usual items. I’ve found that over the years if I don’t have one specific spot for writing utensils, they’ll end up scattered throughout all of my purses and I keep having to buy more.

5. Cutoff Gloves: As a photographer wearing gloves and trying to take photos is almost an impossible task. I always carry around a pair of cutoffs in the winter because they still keep my hands relatively warm while allowing me to still be able to change settings on my camera.

6. Glasses: So I can see…

7. Digital Camera: I always have some sort of camera on me because you never know (and even more now that I’m in a sorority) a photo needs to be taken.

8. Planner: I simply ADORE this Lily Pulizter planner. I got it just over a month ago and have fallen in love with this beautiful piece of organization. If you’re trying to figure out what type of planner you want, seriously consider this one. It’s a bit pricier than the average planner, but it’s definitely worth it.

9: Artist Pens: I got this craft/artist pens from a craft store before I left for England. The course description said a lot of sketching would occur, so I wanted to get something besides crayons I could use. I ended up not using these for sketching at all, but for writing in my trip journal. Now I use them in my planner (I’ve color coded things like School, Work, Greek Life, etc)

10. First Aid Kit: This little box was a holiday gift from one of my jobs and I’ve modified it to be a serious life saver. Besides band-aids, it has hair ties, safety pins, rubber bands, bobby pins, etc. It’s come in handy on numerous occasions and since it’s so small it fits into every single bag I own.
